Portal Makes Me Dizzy

Hi humans and portals.

You see what I did there? I’m also saying Hi to all the new portals out there that are being created in Portal 2, which came out today.

So everyone has been asking me if I was going to get Portal 2 today. I don’t know why you would ask me that, seeing as I don’t play that many games in general, but I decided to answer it here – no, I’m not going to get portal today (or, seeing as it’s almost the end of today, no, I did not get portal today).

I learned of Portal’s existence about three years ago when one of my friends at the boarding school I went to during my second year of high school was playing it on his computer. I was never interested enough in it back then to play it though. However, because of all the hype Portal 2 was getting, I decided to get a hold of Portal and play it a few days ago.

It was a miserable experience.

I played it for 15 minutes. It wasn’t a miserable experience because I wasn’t doing well – I was actually doing quite well. But after 15 minutes, my head felt like it was going to implode because I was so dizzy. Literally all first-person games make me dizzy, and Portal is no exception.

Even Minecraft makes me dizzy.

During my educational psychology class today, we were talking about rates of teenage sexual activity. To give us a more realistic view of the statistics and what is really going on, our instructor showed us a documentary-like video of a girl in high school who is choosing to abstain from sexual activity until she is married.

The video describes that she has a boyfriend who respects her opinions.

The funny part about this whole thing?

Her boyfriend’s name is Willy Wallace.

Topic #90: Pick something that annoys you and redesign how it works. Are you sick of the long lines at the DMV? Bothered by waiting in the doctors office without being told how long you have to wait? Pick something that annoyed you yesterday, and describe how you would redesign or change it to make your annoyances go away. Could be a device, a machine, a process, a place, anything.

One thing that annoyed me recently was the fact that my paycheck arrives only once every two weeks. Normally I don’t have a problem with it because I use a credit card for almost all of my purchases and I only have to pay my credit card bill once a month, and regardless, I generally don’t have problems with running out of money.

However, as you saw in yesterday’s blog post, I had to pay my tuition for my summer courses. My parents offered to pay it for me, but according to my rough calculations, I would have enough money of my own to pay it, so I told them that I would take care of it myself.

Unfortunately, my calculations were a couple hundred dollars off, and if I were to go along with my plan, I would have to wait for the money from my paycheck to be added in to my bank account. It would’ve been more convenient if I could have paid it all at once directly from my bank account, but instead, I decided to split it up into multiple payments and use my credit card so I didn’t have to wait for my money to arrive.

To solve this problem, I would build a machine that automatically measures how much work you’ve done and pays you in real time. For example, if you get paid $36 an hour, a cent would be automatically be deposited into your bank account for every second that you’re at work.

Of course, something like this is unrealistic, but it would make life a lot more convenient for situations like the one I had yesterday.

I Just Paid My Tuition

The tuition for my summer classes is due in three days, and I have not yet paid it. Someone should remind me to do it in two days in case I forget.

… Or I could just do it now.

And just like that, my tuition is paid. That’s the magic of reading my blog. One second you’re reading about how I still need to pay my tuition, and in the next line of text, you read about how I already paid my tuition.

Topic #89: When did you realize you were an adult? (If you haven’t yet, when do you think you will?)

I don’t think I’m an adult yet – I’m still a first-year university student and am still heavily dependent on my parents for support, primarily financially.

I’m taking a course about adolescent development this semester, and at the beginning of the semester, we had a class survey about how many people thought they were no longer adolescents. Most people voted that they believed they were not yet adults, so it doesn’t seem like I’m out of the ordinary when I say that I’m not an adult yet.

I think the biggest factor that makes me think I’m not an adult yet is because I’m not financially independent. I’m living in an apartment on my own right now and I have a job, but I’m not paying my own rent for the room in my apartment, and my job isn’t anywhere near enough to support me. The amount I get from my current job is enough to pay all of my other expenses, such as paying all my bills and buying necessities, but if I were to pay my own rent, I would have no money left over. So, I think that once I get a job that pays me enough for me to survive all on my own, I will consider myself an adult. I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon, though, because I’m not going to get a well-paying job until I graduate from university, and possibly even not until I graduate from graduate school.

Using the Correct Port Fail

I went to my workplace to get a little bit of work done and to set up a computer on the network that would act as a shared drive manager. The getting a little bit of work done part went by quickly, but the setting up a computer on the network didn’t.

I noticed that we had three Dell compact computers in a locked storage room in the back of the office. At first, I decided to try one of these computers – it didn’t really matter how old they were or how bad the processor was, the only thing that was important was that it would connect to the Internet, and that it had plenty of USB ports.

I grabbed the desktop at the top and brought it over to my work area to plug it in to a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to set it up. Oddly, the computer turned on but didn’t send any signal at all to the monitor. I tried restarting it a few times but it still didn’t work. I unplugged the computer and brought it back to the storage room to exchange it with a different computer.

The next computer powered on properly and I could see the Dell loading logo on the monitor, but when it started loading the operating system, the screen went black. Again, I tried restarting it a few times, but it didn’t work. I brought it back to the storage room to exchange it with the last remaining computer, hoping that the third time was a charm.

It wasn’t. The last computer was worst – it powered on but sent nothing to the monitor, and just kept beeping.

At this point I’m obviously frustrated because all three computers aren’t working, and there was obviously no point in keeping these computers if they’re broken but somebody did anyway.

Then, on a side table, I find another Dell desktop. This one isn’t a compact one, but it looked less dusty than the other ones, so I decided to try this one out. Miraculously, it works. Unmiraculously, the Internet doesn’t work.

I spent about two hours going back and forth from the Dell computer to my computer trying to find out what the problem could possibly be. I downloaded tons of different drivers trying to find out what the problem was. I even considered reinstalling the operating system, or installing a different version of the operating system.

The I finally figured out what the problem was.

I had to move the ethernet cable to a different port.

Remember, when submitting your homework, don’t forget to attach the document.

… Yes, forgetting to attach a document to an email is the only thing I have to blog about today; my day was very uninteresting.

Topic #89: Who is the last person you’d want to be stuck in an elevator with? And why?

I can’t think of a specific person with whom I would hate to be stuck in an elevator, but in general, I would hate to be stuck with someone that smells bad.

I have a very acute sense of smell, and it’s very difficult for me to become desensitized to pungent smells, especially bad body odor. If I was stuck in a small confined space with a smelly person, I would probably faint from the stench.

Allergic to Warm Weather

This post is over 15 years old and may contain information that is incorrect, outdated, or no longer relevant.

In reference to my blog post from April 10, I think that I acquired some sort of allergy for warm weather. For the past two days, it’s been chillier than it was three days ago, and my cold symptoms didn’t worsen. Then suddenly, it got warm again today, and now I’m really tired and my cold symptoms are worsening.

In other news, I don’t think I mentioned this in my blog before, but my workplace has been having some issues with thefts lately, starting from this academic semester. One of the staff members actually used our office as his apartment/home last semester so very few people had the opportunity to be alone in the office and steal anything, but the resident staff member graduated at the end of the previous semester. Since then, things have been randomly disappearing.

One of the things that disappeared was a microphone. This particular microphone has been driving me crazy, because every time I go to use it, it disappears. Then, after a while, it randomly reappears, or someone says that they took it (without notifying me) and returns it.

As of yesterday, this microphone was missing, but it randomly appeared on my desk today.

So if you happen to be the person who had it and returned it, and you read my blog, then thanks for returning the microphone. If you happen to be the person who stole it and decided to return it, and you read my blog, then you made the right choice. If you’re a ghost that took the microphone and decided to return it, and you read my blog, please don’t take it again. I really need it.
