The Daily Shoot Assignment of the Day

#DS572: Parallel lines draw the eye. Make a photograph with parallel lines today. (Assigned June 10, 2011.)

These are some random bars that have been attached to the wall space above my desk since I moved in to my apartment unit. I’m not really sure what they do, but they’re parallel, and I don’t feel like finding something else that’s parallel, so this will have to do.

Proper Use of Mailing Lists

Tip of the Day: If you’re going to send an email to one specific person asking him/her a question that only (s)he can answer, use his/her direct email address rather than a mailing list that contains 73 other people.

I don’t have time to write a longer post today. My schedule sort of got scrambled around this week because a bunch of stuff was moved around and I had to do a lot of unexpected things, and my reorganization of tasks and events didn’t work out so well, so I’m a little bit behind on my work.

The Importance of Sleep

I have a zoology exam coming up in about two weeks, and some of the questions on the exam relate to the mental functions of sleep. So, I decided to pick out this Daily Post prompt and twist it into a way that I can write about what I’m learning so it can act as extra practice for me.

The Daily Post at WordPress.com

Topic #323: If you needed more time, where would you take from? Lets say you had an emergency this week that required you to spend an hour, every day, taking care of something you don’t currently do. Where would that time come from? What would you drop first?

I’m not sure what I definitely would reduce first, but it seems like the most logical thing to drop is some sort of entertainment that is not needed in my life right now.

One thing that I assume a lot of people would say that they would drop first is sleep. I would drop sleep for up to 7.5 hours a night, but past that, I would not reduce it any more because if I did, I would be putting my own health at risk.

Sleep is largely responsible for restoring bodily functions and bringing you back to a well-functioning state. If you do not get 7-8 hours of sleep every night, your sleep debt piles up and you get progressively and increasingly tired and unresponsive. After a while, you will start having periods of microsleep where you doze off for very short periods of time, which can be extremely dangerous if you’re engaged in tasks that require your full attention like driving.

Sleep is also required for enhancing your memory. While you are sleeping, your brain is constantly creating scenarios in your mind about real life. Sometimes, we are able to recall these as dreams, and sometimes, we are not. The more our brains visualize ourselves doing a particular task over and over again, the better we get at it because we are essentially practicing without actually doing the task. Studies have shown that staying up all night to study for exams is actually not a good idea, and that getting a full night of sleep is better because your brain will take the information that you learned before you sleep and repeat it in your mind to get better at it.

Missing Notebooks Not Missing

Tip of the Day: If you notice that two notebooks are missing and you think that you left them at home when you brought them home during Thanksgiving break, search through your room and make sure rather than just assuming that you know what happened and not looking for them at all.

Or else you’ll randomly open one of your drawers and realize that the missing notebooks were in there all along, and you didn’t actually even bring them home with you during Thanksgiving break in the first place.

That’s all for today; I have to go get ready to send out an all-campus advertisement email for the Badger Herald tonight, which is a terrorizing and horrible process, but is unfortunately a required part of my job.

Picasa Web Albums Free Space Win

Ever since Google+ came out, I noticed that my storage space usage in Picasa Web went down to 0. At first I thought it was a bug, but I noticed today that it wasn’t.

Picasa Web Albums

According to a page on Google’s help area, all pictures that are less than 2048 by 2048 pixels are stored for free. Apparently they had this before Google+ came around too; before Google+, pictures that were less than 800 by 800 pixels were stored for free. Obviously, I didn’t notice that because I don’t really upload many photos that are less than 800 pixels on the longest edge.

Now that I know this is in effect, I will start to upload files in a higher resolution. I generally upload files at 1024 pixels by 576 pixels, and I usually max out at 1600 pixels by 900 pixels at the most, but now there’s no reason why I shouldn’t upload them at 2048 pixels by 1152 pixels.

I’ll also try to link my images to their larger versions in case you have a large monitor and want to see the photo better.

LEGOS

I know that my blog posts have been either really long or really boring lately, and that’s mostly because I haven’t really had anything interesting happen in the past week or so. And I’m pretty sure that, by now, most of us know that if I don’t have anything to blog about, I go to The Daily Post on WordPress.com to find a random topic that seems interesting, and respond to it.

I came back to campus on November 27, and I’ve been going to class, doing homework, and working since then.

A few days ago, I was doing my laundry when I came across this in the corner of our laundry room.

Legos

It was a little panel in the wall with a sticker on it that said “LEGOS.” It was so random that I decided to take a picture of it.

I’m sure it has some secret, cryptic meaning, but I just haven’t been able to figure it out yet.
