Amazon has this interesting feature called “Recommendations.”

The website analyzes your browsing history and recent purchases, and determines what other items you might be interested in purchasing. For example, if you tend to look at a lot of books, it will conclude that you are interested in reading, and suggest some good, high-rated books for you.

I recently ran out of toothpaste.

And what better place to replenish your toothpaste supply than Amazon, right?

I went ahead and ordered some toothpaste from Amazon because I didn’t really want to go shopping to a general store in-person. After completing my order, I returned to Amazon’s home page…

And saw that my list of recommended items was completely dominated by personal hygiene items.

Apparently, Amazon decided that, after my single (and first ever) purchase of toothpaste on Amazon, I must definitely have an interest in personal hygiene. So not only did it recommend even more tooth­paste (because the two tubes that I just ordered clearly weren’t enough), but it also suggested some Q-tips to go along with my tooth­paste (because toothbrushes are clearly only for noobs).

In other news, if you decide to have a baked potato for an evening snack and stick it in the microwave, try not to forget about it overnight.

Or else you might end up having cold baked potato for breakfast the next morning when you finally notice it’s still sitting in the microwave.
