Bonus Topic: If you only had an hour to live, what what you do with those 60 minutes?

I’ve been asked this question a handful of times before, and most people that ask me it are usually unsatisfied with my answer because of how realistic it is. Most impulsive people may say “go skydiving” or “go swimming with sharks,” while most violent people say “go on a suicide mission” or something of the like. I, on the other hand, would not do anything interesting, but make sure that my departure from my current life is as smooth as possible.

I would start off by writing a blog post about my situation and how I’m about to die in an hour, and that my website will now be dormant and no longer have any further updates. My current web host is owned by a friend of mine and I don’t plan on having my website go down anytime soon, so I would link to that blog post from all my social networking sites to spread the news as much as possible.

As for my possessions, I don’t know exactly how the transfer of property works from a legal standpoint, but I would write a note asking for everything under my ownership to go to my parents and relatives. As for my online accounts, I would give the credentials to two of my friends who I know will not be overwhelmed with maintaining my accounts if anything were to go wrong.

Topic #15: If you had a time machine that only let you spend one hour in a different time, what date would you go to?

This is an intriguing question – generally, when I’m asked a time machine question, it usually involves going to a specific point in my life and living the rest of my life (again) from that point on. As a result, when I’m asked this question, I usually answer it by saying that I would go back to immediately before I entered high school and put a lot more effort into my academics.

But the stipulation on today’s topic is interesting, as I can only spend one more hour in the time period that I choose to go to. Going back in time and changing an hour will probably not do too much, as attempting to put more effort into my high school academics will take far longer than just a single hour to accomplish. Thus, instead of going into the past, I would probably go into the future.

However, this creates another problem. If I go into the future and see something that I don’t like, there literally is nothing that I can do about it, and I will have to spend the rest of my life up to that point in misery. People may say that I could work harder to not have that appear in my future, but there’s a slight problem with that thought process. Regardless of what I do now, that will ultimately happen to me, as it already appeared in my future. If I work harder now to avoid this negative thing from happening in the future and I succeed, it would not have happened in the future anyway, so I would have never seen it in my future in the first place.

If you don’t have a solid basic understanding of variable time, then that may be difficult to comprehend, but to put it simply, if I was given a time machine that only let me spend one hour in a different time, I would not use it and live my life normally.

Topic #14: What made you decide to start a blog? If you’ve blogged about this before, go back and read it. Is that still the reason? What’s changed?

I actually did blog about why I started a blog – it was the first real blog post I ever wrote in my classic blog, Five Minutes in My Head. My justification there for starting a blog was that everyone else was doing it, and I wanted to increase the popularity of my website. It seemed like at that point, I was actually very motivated to start something that people would like, and it seemed like I put a decent amount of effort to at least attempt to make people laugh; I have a handful of random links added for comedic effect.

I’m glad that I did start a blog. Not only did it increase the popularity of my website by attracting people that continued to come back, it also helped me keep track of the things I’ve done in my life. It’s interesting to go back to my older blog posts and click on a random date to find out what I did on that date, or what I felt was important enough to share with the world. As of right now, I have archives of blog posts from April 05, 2009 and onward.

Finally, the second part of the prompt doesn’t exactly make sense. There is a specific reason that a person would start blogging, and it wouldn’t change just because time has passed. The reason for continuing to blog may have changed, but the reason for starting should still remain the same.

Topic #13: What are you looking forward to this year?

There actually isn’t anything particular that I’m looking forward to – 2011 seems like it’s going to be just a normal year. Everything big in my life either already happened in 2010 (like my admission to college and completing my first semester), and the closest big upcoming event that I’m looking forward to is in 2012 (to see if the world will end or not).

I guess there’s still small things that might happen in 2011 that I’m looking forward to, such as continuing college and planning for what I’m going to do in the future, but those don’t seem like interesting-enough events to talk about in a blog post.

As for my website, I’m looking forward to watching it grow (but then again, I’m eager every day to see how much it has grown). Choosing to blog every day and using the Daily Post when I’m out of ideas will help my website grow significantly based on the amount of content. As for other content such as articles and other pages, I plan on creating more content on my own rather than consuming random other people’s content. I realized that I waste too much time reading other people’s pointless and meaningless stuff and keep going back to it. I decided that instead of reading everything sent to me, I’ll be more selective in what I read, and spend the leftover time to create stuff of my own.

Topic #11: Write about one thing you’ve never told anyone and explain why.

I heard a rumble in the distance. I felt vibrations in the ground. I knew something was wrong.

On a random day a few years ago, I took my dog out to a local hiking trail. I had spent way too much time on the computer, and I needed to get some fresh air. Not only that, my dog hadn’t exercised for months, and he was becoming frail and weak. I put my shoes on and we started heading towards the entrance of the hiking trail.

Once we got to the trail, we started walking, absorbing the nature around us. It was a calm, peaceful, sunny afternoon with birds chirping quietly from afar. There was a squirrel high up in the trees nibbling on an acorn while a deer dashed around in the distance.

Everything was going perfectly when suddenly, I heard a rumble in the distance. I felt vibrations in the ground. I knew something was wrong. I spun around quickly to see a giant bear charging towards me from behind.

At first I pondered running, but I concluded that I would never be able to outspeed the bear. I instead chose to plant myself into the ground, then trick the bear and move out of the way at the last second.

Things didn’t go as planned; I couldn’t move away fast enough. I almost made it – the only thing that was damaged was the pinky finger on my left hand. This is the story of how I lost my pinky.

Why have I never told this story before? Because it’s not true. I still have all five fingers on my left hand.

Day 2 of graphic-less content… I promise I’ll post more pictures and videos soon.

So Far in 2011…

Since the time I released this section a few days ago, a few people have asked me how I came up with the two things that I’m going to keep track of. They weren’t actually thought out very well – I just picked two things that I don’t do so frequently that I would be updating it excessively every day, but I didn’t want to pick something that I almost never did.

I picked the number of Taco Bell tacos eaten because I generally spend a few late nights per week at the Badger Herald, and when I get hungry, I go to a nearby Taco Bell to get some food. As for my laundry, I always tend to wait until the latest possible moment to do my laundry (when I’m either literally out of underwear or socks), and I want to see how many times I end up doing laundry in one year.

(Note: these numbers will start going up once I get back to my university campus.)

Topic #11: What do you want to be remembered for?

I think it’s a little bit too early to decide what I want to be remembered for, seeing as I started college less than half a year ago and I’m still not very close to pursuing a career that I want to keep for the rest of my life, but hopefully it will be something with a positive connotation.

I’m probably going to get a few questions why I didn’t cover what I hope to be remembered as, so I’m going to answer it now – I don’t share future plans in general. Whenever I share something, it’s usually an anecdote, something more abstract, or something insignificant (such as “I will go shopping tomorrow”). When it starts involving more personal things, I prefer to keep them hidden until I can say for sure that they will happen (or have already happened).
