How I Lost a Finger

Topic #11: Write about one thing you’ve never told anyone and explain why.

I heard a rumble in the distance. I felt vibrations in the ground. I knew something was wrong.

On a random day a few years ago, I took my dog out to a local hiking trail. I had spent way too much time on the computer, and I needed to get some fresh air. Not only that, my dog hadn’t exercised for months, and he was becoming frail and weak. I put my shoes on and we started heading towards the entrance of the hiking trail.

Once we got to the trail, we started walking, absorbing the nature around us. It was a calm, peaceful, sunny afternoon with birds chirping quietly from afar. There was a squirrel high up in the trees nibbling on an acorn while a deer dashed around in the distance.

Everything was going perfectly when suddenly, I heard a rumble in the distance. I felt vibrations in the ground. I knew something was wrong. I spun around quickly to see a giant bear charging towards me from behind.

At first I pondered running, but I concluded that I would never be able to outspeed the bear. I instead chose to plant myself into the ground, then trick the bear and move out of the way at the last second.

Things didn’t go as planned; I couldn’t move away fast enough. I almost made it – the only thing that was damaged was the pinky finger on my left hand. This is the story of how I lost my pinky.

Why have I never told this story before? Because it’s not true. I still have all five fingers on my left hand.

I missed 11:11 AM and 11:11 PM, so I guess 1:11 AM will have to do.
