A Miniature Revolution

Two revolutionary things happened today.

First, I attended the last class of the first academic year of my career as a university student.

Second, a random Jimmy John’s guy gave me a free sandwich and pointed out to me that there’s actually a Jimmy John’s right across the street from my apartment that I somehow did not see for this entire past academic year. This is revolutionary because I usually have to go to Subway to get sandwiches, and the nearest Subway is about a quarter to a half of a mile away from my apartment. Now I have a convenient place to get food.

The funny thing about this happening today is that a night ago, I had a chat with an old friend, and we somehow talked about Jimmy John’s. I told him that I haven’t been to Jimmy John’s since my fourth year in high school because there weren’t any Jimmy John’s around where I lived or went to classes. Little did I know that I lived a few hundred meters away from one.

Topic #103: Where do you find acceptance? For your ideas? For the secret notions you have for who you really want to be? Or think you are? Who are the friends, family or co-workers who are most accepting of your true self? And how do they demonstrate their acceptance? What is different about how they treat you than other people?

I think it’s pretty unsurprising when I say that I find most acceptance from the Internet’s content consumers. Of course, as expected, there are plenty of haters who think I should stop creating content, but a majority of my readers like what I make and encourage me to continue and to improve what I make.

I don’t really have any secret notions of who I really want to be that are different than what is publicly known (or I’m willing to publicly offer). Generally, my desire to become more successful on the Internet has been met with support and encouragement, but my thoughts on what I wish to pursue as a profession has mostly been met with indifference.

My real-life friends, family members, and co-workers are generally left uninformed about what I do online unless they choose to pursue the information on their own. As a result, the type of person as which they see me is completely different than those who know me online. People in real-life are overall generally accepting of me, but people online take it up to a more intense level, being more accepting as well as providing feedback and suggestions on how they think I can become more appealing.

A Ballpoint Pen is Not a Key

Tip of the Day: When you pull out your keys, shove it into the keyhole, and nothing happens, make sure that the object you pulled out of your pants is actually your keys and not a ballpoint pen.

In other news, today is the last night of work at the Badger Herald for this semester. At the end of each semester after we finish the last issue, we have a party called Champaign Night where all Badger Herald staff members are invited to drink champagne and make a mess. It doesn’t really matter for me because I usually don’t stay for crazy parties anyway, but what does matter is that everyone is starting to file into the office already, and they’re extremely loud. And we’re nowhere near finishing the paper.

Topic #103: What would you do differently if you were president or Prime Minister of your country for a day?

If I was the president of the United States for one day, I would probably not do anything differently. I don’t think I am intelligent or knowledgeable enough to manage a country, and I don’t want the United States to be harmed in any way because I make a change based off of incomplete or misjustified reasoning.

Topic #102: What do you want to accomplish with your blog? What is it for?

I’ve been asked this question quite a bit before, mostly by people who oppose me and claim that my blog will end up doing me no good. I’ve thought about it before and have come up with many different reasons, but I’ve managed to narrow it down to two basic core reasons.

The first is for myself. Since I was little, I liked to write about things that happened during my day. I liked to write in general, but I didn’t always have or could come up with good things to write about, so I just wrote about interesting things that I observed or did. This started off as somewhat of a diary in a notebook; after doing this for a while, I moved on to the computer. Years after I wrote my first diary entry, I decided to make a public blog to keep track of what I’ve been doing day-by-day, hoping that it will end up becoming a good memoir of how I grew up.

The second reason is for the entertainment of my readers. Of course, not all my blog posts are interesting or funny, but I like to think back about things that have happened to me and construct a recap in a form of a comedic anecdote. Luckily for me, it appears like a decent number of people enjoy reading my stories. I think that my blog basically gives others a window into the life of a nineteen-year-old university student. My readers can either get an idea of what might happen to them when they get older, relate to me, or think back about their days as a teenager.

My first final exam is tomorrow, and it’s for educational psychology. I should go study for that.

In other random news, the Badger Herald staff took a new staff photo yesterday. You should check it out and try to find me. It probably won’t be very difficult, seeing as I’m pretty distinct in more than one way.

Topic #101: If you could go invisible for a day, what would you do?

If I could go invisible for one day, I would probably go around to random places exploring where my presence would normally change the atmosphere, and pay attention to the differences between the nature of others when I am there visibly and when I’m there invisibly.

For example, if there was a particular room that I went to everyday, I would go there while I was invisible to see if the people in that room react differently when I am not there. This would help me get a general idea of how others adjust to my presence, and if others receive me with a welcoming attitude relative to when I’m not there.

Who’s the one that’s dead again?

As most of you have probably heard by now, Osama bin Laden is supposedly dead, according to the American government. Working for a newspaper, most of my co-workers were extremely excited because this is breaking news. Our editor-in-chief published an article about Osama’s death on our website.

But there was one problem.

Who’s the one that’s dead again?

(For my international readers who don’t get it, Osama is the founder of al-Qaeda who was killed by American military, and Obama is the president of the United States.)

Topic #100: Your phone, laptop, tablet, iPad, and desktop are dead. Will you make it through a normal working day and evening? What would you miss the most?

I think that if I was cut off from my electronics and Internet access for a full day, I would still be fine, as long as it was only for one day.

I generally don’t use my phone that much at all, so that wouldn’t really be much of a problem at all. I would probably feel incomplete without having a laptop or iPod Touch to be able to check my email, but I’m sure that there aren’t many people who need my attention so urgently that they can’t wait 24 hours. I don’t have a tablet or iPad. As for my desktop, I don’t have a desktop of my own, but I have a desktop at my workplace that I can use to work that day. If I’m not allowed to use that desktop either, I can just switch a working day with my assistant and not have any problems. During class, I take notes with a pen on a notebook anyway, so I won’t be needing my laptop urgently for class.

I think the thing I would miss most is using my laptop or iPod Touch for email and instant messaging communications. Email and instant messaging acts as my link to my friends and other people I know, and it’s especially important for me because of how little I go out and meet up with people in person.

Firefox 4 and Writing a Book

This post is over 15 years old and may contain information that is incorrect, outdated, or no longer relevant.
My views and opinions can change, and those that are expressed in this post may not necessarily reflect the ones I hold today.

Ever since Firefox 4 came out, everyone’s been pressuring me to upgrade to it. Uncharacteristically, I refused because I was satisfied with Firefox 3.something/whateverIwasusing. The biggest noticeable improvement in Firefox 4 was that the top navigation area of the browser was condensed. The only problem was, for me, it wouldn’t be a condensation, it would be an expansion. With Firefox 3, I was using an add-on called Personal Menu that allowed me to already get rid of a row at the top of my browser.

The thing that finally got me to upgrade was the app tab feature. These tabs act as small tabs that contain the websites that you use most often. The best part was that you can’t accidentally close them (which I tend to do frequently). They’re shrunk down in width to just the icon, so it barely takes up any space and allows more space to read the titles of other tabs that you have open.

As of right now, I have three app tabs – one for my email, one for my calendar, and one for Twitter. If any of these get updated (such as receiving a new email or one of the people I’m following tweeting something), the tab glows blue and I notice that something was updated in the tab.

So if you’re like me and procrastinating upgrading to Firefox 4, you should probably do it in the near future to take advantage of the app tabs. And apparently, it’s faster than the previous browser; I haven’t noticed any difference, but I guess it doesn’t matter if I notice it or not if it was already statistically proven.

Topic #99: Have you ever considered writing a book? If so what would it be about? Make a list of the ideas you want to cover, or the themes it might have. If you’ve never considered writing a book, what other major work have you thought about (a movie? a symphony?). Write a paragraph or two about what you imagine it would be like.

I actually have considered writing a book. One of my friends, Garrett Royce, was thinking about writing a book and he motivated me to write a book as well. I was originally planning on racing him to see who could finish a book first, but I ended up not actually writing a book.

I was planning on writing a book about the fourth dimension and how it acts as a scientific explanation to Christianity. For a while, the articles on my website about the fourth dimension were one of the most popular articles I had. After I finished my presentation of it at school, my entire class was intrigued and a handful of people contacted me afterward for more information. The original information I presented was in short blog post form, and the paper I wrote for my class didn’t turn out how I wanted it to because I had to follow a rubric. I wanted to write a full-length book about it in a cohesive and understandable way, but I ended up not following through with my intentions. I still want to write more about the fourth dimension, but there’s a lot of other things that I have to finish first.
