Living Forever

Topic #29: If you could live forever, would you? Why or why not?

My desire of wanting to live forever or not is heavily based on the conditions. Obviously, if I am going to get ill and disabled when I approach 100 years of age like most other human beings do, then no, I would not want to live forever. Many people with severe illnesses or disabilities want to end their life as quickly as possible, but cannot because of laws that make suicide or assisted suicide illegal. I would not want to be in this situation when I am old, then realize that I have to live for an eternity with the particular illness or disability because I chose to live forever.

However, on the contrary, if I were able to live in the same health that I am in right now, then yes, i would choose to live forever. There are many things that I am curious about right now that I could find the answer to if I were to live forever. In addition, if I were to remain in the moderately good health that I am in right now, I would have an eternity to accomplish anything that I want. One of the biggest problems people face is the lack of time. When trying to complete all their responsibilities and desires, most people run out of time and cannot live life to the fullest of their desires.

If I knew that I could live forever, I could theoretically become one of the smartest people in the world in a couple hundred years because of how much I would have experienced in my life time, and how much time I would have spent studying more things. Although I would still have to finish my university education within the next three years and either pursue more education or a job, my mental advancement doesn’t have to end there. Even when I do have a job, I would not feel hesitant or doubtful about continuing my studies while I’m working because I would know that in my eternal lifetime, almost everything that I learn will eventually become useful. In addition, if I were to stay in the same mental health as I am now, I would not experience memory problems like most older people do.
