I just took a psychology exam today; I need to take one more exam in philosophy next Tuesday, then I am DONE WITH INTENSIVE ACADEMICS UNTIL AFTER SPRING BREAK.

Maybe now I can actually have some extra time to relax and catch up on sleep.

The best part is that the philosophy exam for next week is an essay exam, and I generally perform much better on essay exams than I do on multiple choice exams. Also, we went over the material repeatedly so much during lecture and discussion sections that I think it’s almost impossible for anyone to do poorly.

Topic #53: How long do you think you could go without a shower?

I get asked this question once in a while, and a lot of people think that this is an embarrassing question and don’t want to answer it truthfully, but I don’t actually think that it’s embarrassing at all.

I think a large factor of people overreacting to this question and saying “eew, I couldn’t go a single day without a shower” is due to cultural influences. With today’s technology, generally everyone has a shower in their home or apartment that they have access to whenever they need it, so there’s essentially no excuse not to take a shower. Even for those who don’t for any reason, there are public showers available at public work-out areas and recreational facilities. Because of this, society as put a great influence on staying clean all the time.

However, before the technology of having water pumped straight to your home and through your shower head, people were unable to take showers on a regular basis. People would go weeks without even getting the opportunity to take a shower, because they needed to use the water for more urgent purposes (like drinking it). Based off of this information, I’m assuming that I can also go a couple weeks without taking a shower.

Of course, it would be more beneficial to me if I was able to spend those two weeks alone and not interact with anyone else, because I can bear my own smell while others probably cannot bear others’ two-week-old body odor.

However, I question my own ability to deal with my own greasy face or hair – I tend to produce a lot of oil on my face and in my hair, so much that I usually wash my face four to five times a day, and my hair becomes noticeably glossy about 16 hours after I last took a shower. So I am hoping that I would still have access to a sink in which I could wash my face and hair.

I Hate Road Trips

Topic #52: Describe the best road trip you’ve ever taken. If you’re feeling all glass half empty, the worst road trip. Or describe a road trip you’d like to take and why you want to take it.

This question is difficult to answer seeing as I don’t really like road trips in the first place. I hate being in a car for an extended period of time, especially because I get dizzy and can’t really do anything except talk. Even then, I usually don’t talk much in the car because I’m on the verge of getting carsick and my brain feels like it’s going to implode.

It’s also difficult to answer because I haven’t really been on many road trips in the first place. I’m pretty sure I’ve driven extended periods of time to far-away places before, but I don’t really recall them as memorable road trips that fit the definition of what a road trip actually is.

If I had to pick the worst road trip out of my limited choices, I would pick any road trip during which I got sick or threw up (which is most likely all of them).

There aren’t any road trips that I would like to take because I generally avoid traveling via car as much as possible. I have a tendancy to get sick even during short trips, and I think I’ve been so psycho­logically terrorized by how sick I get in a car that I even start getting slightly dizzy merely by sitting in the car and not even going anywhere. My dad says that a good way to avoid getting carsick is to be the driver rather than the passenger, but that doesn’t really work for me either.

I tried punching it a few times but I think that only made it worse…

UPDATE: To all of you asking or wondering, no, there’s nothing wrong with the electricity in my apartment, it’s just the light bulb that randomly decided to start malfunctioning.

UPDATE 2: I filed a work order with my apartment’s front desk, and someone from the maintenance team came in to replace the light bulb, and it’s working fine now.

A Few Changes to my Blog

I’ve been getting some complaints lately about how people aren’t satisfied with my blog. They claim that my blog used to be interesting and would serve as an insight to my (supposedly) interesting life, but now it’s become boring. The culprit here appears to be my attempt at blogging everyday in 2011 for Word­Press’ Post a Day, and using their prompts to fill up some days of blogging.

I noticed that the prompts were becoming slightly unintriguing and weren’t prompting me to be as textually exciting as I would normally be when I write my own blog posts with photos that I take during my day.

However, I already participated in Post a Day for all of January and February, and I don’t want to stop now. I want to find out if I’m able to do this for the rest of the year like I was originally anticipating.

As a result, I decided that I’m going to continue blogging daily, but make some changes as requested. Instead of posting all my blog entries the same, I’m going to color-code the dates on the calendar index now.

The red entries (like some of the earlier blog posts from Five Minutes in My Head) are the ones that will be particularly worth reading. The regular gray entries will be normal entries that I post normally on a regular basis. The light gray entries will be days when I simply answer a Daily Post prompt and don’t add anything else into the post.

By using this color-coding system, you’ll be able to know which blog posts will be considered “boring” and which ones are “interesting.”

Topic #50: What would you do with a million dollars, tax free?

Unlike most of you humans out there, I’m not much of a materialistic person, so no, I would not go on a massive shopping spree buying everything that I can get my hands on.

Being more of a minimalistic person, I would probably spend the money on things that I necessarily have to spend on (either now or in the future). For example, I would pay off all the loans I have for college, pay my rent for the remaining duration of my contract, pay off any mortgages or loans that my parents might have, and pay off any debts in general that we might have.

Then, I would probably keep the rest in four different banks (because each bank is only ensured $250,000 by the FDIC), and keep it there for future spending. Being a student at university, I’m going to have to end up spending a lot more within the next several years, both to finish my undergraduate studies and to go to graduate school. As a result, a million dollars isn’t exactly as much as it sounds like, and it will be extremely useful to keep it handy so I don’t have to be burdened with student loan debts after I finish all my studies and enter the work force.

Changes Coming Up

I have a homework assignment due for computer science later today, and I’m probably going to spend the rest of the night catching up on my reading for my psychology and philosophy exams coming up later this coming week, so I’m doing my blog post early today with one photo.

I’ve been getting some complaints about how my blog is slowly becoming unworthy of being read, so I’m going to be addressing that in tomorrow’s blog post. The resolution isn’t drastic, and it will resemble something I’ve done in the past, but it should still satisfy the people who are disappointed in me for writing boring blog posts.

Dell Customer Support Fail, Part VII

Yes, the Dell repair technician finally came to fix my laptop today, and my it is finally working. I can finally use my laptop without attaching it to an external monitor.

But there’s still one problem.

The screen that Dell sent to the repair technician to swap out with the broken screen that I had wasn’t exactly new. The package that it came it was labeled as refurbished, and it wasn’t refurbished enough because there are darkened areas at the top left of the screen, similar to what magnet damaged looked like on those larger CRT monitors. Dell said that they would offer me a full machine exchange if this third repair didn’t work, but seeing as my laptop is still working and it would be annoying to get it exchanged, I think I’m just going to use it.

Maybe if I feel like I want a new laptop over this coming summer or something, I’ll finally report that the third repair wasn’t perfect and get an exchange.

I’m also thinking about writing a more cohesive anecdote about this in my Anecdotes section on the articles page, seeing as this might be a pretty interesting story for someone to read, but it’s currently distributed among seven different blog posts.

Too Short for a Title

Today’s Saturday, I have an exam coming up this week, and I have another exam coming up next week, so I have to put my weekend to good use. I only have one photo for today, but the Dell repair technician is scheduled to come fix my laptop agian tomorrow, so I’ll hopefully have something more interesting tomorrow.
